HISTORY

 

The MSMHC Sacred Heart Province, Tinsukia was canonically erected on 13th February, 1988. It is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and it comprises of the communities in the Archdioceses of Imphal and Tellichery in the states of Manipur and Kerala, the dioceses of Kohima, Dibrugarh, Miao and Amravati in the states of Nagaland, Upper Assam, East Arunachal Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The province began its journey with 105 members in 13 communities in three dioceses of Dibrugarh, Kohima and Imphal. Following are the houses that existed at the time of erection of the province.

Within a span of 21 years we have witnessed significant growth in number, expansion, qualitative improvement and the Providence of God accompanying us in our needs. Presently we are blessed with 244 members of which 189 are perpetually professed and 55 are temporarily professed. The province has 36 houses at the moment.

We work in collaboration with the parish in 25 centres. 11 are independent centres owned by the province. They include formation houses, hostels and schools that are run and managed by the sisters themselves.

Officially the province is known as Tinsukia Province but due to lack of accommodation in the initial stage, the office of the Provincial was functioned from St. Mary’s Convent, Dibrugarh and it is carried on till today. It may be shifted to Tinsukia, its official station in the near future.
